PCGG gives Tan brod last chance

The Presidential Commission on Good Governance (PCGG) is giving Mariano Tanenglian, brother of business taipan Lucio Tan, one last chance to appear before the officials of PCGG to be considered as witness against his own brother.

PCGG Commissioner Ricardo Abcede said that this is the last chance that will be given to Mariano Tanenglian to appear before them in order for PCGG to study his offer to testify against his brother in exchange for immunity for suit.

Abcede added that granting someone immunity from suit is not that easy and is very important. The Commission wants to interview Tanenglian and see whether his testimony would be valuable for the government.

A third housemaid, identified as Gina Renacia, 33, has filed charges against businessman Mariano Tanenglian and his family before the Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegedly abusing her.

The housemaid accused Tan; his wife, Aleta; and children Maximillian and Fayette for supposed “maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide.” The Philippine National Police (PNP) endorsed her complaint to the DOJ.

Renacia, according to the complaint, was 15 years old when Tanenglian and his family employed her as a housemaid. During her service as housemaid, she was allegedly beaten, forced to shave her head and slapped whenever she did something wrong. Earlier this year, former housemaids Mary Jane Sollano, 18, and Aljane Bacanto, 19, separately filed similar complaints before the DOJ. The two also accused the Tanenglian family for abusing them and maltreatment.

When sought for a reaction, Tanenglian’s camp said the allegations were “part of a bigger picture.” Mariano Tanenglian is the estranged brother of businessman Lucio Tan.

“As we all know somebody is trying to stop our client from testifying at the Sandiganbayan,” Tanenglian’s lawyer, Raymund Quiroz, said. He added that they will answer all charges once they receive a copy of the complaint.

Taipan questions validity of brod's offer to testify for gov't (Malaya)

Lawyers of taipan Lucio Tan questioned the validity of allowing estranged brother Mariano Tanenglian to become a witness for the government, saying that Mariano has no legal standing to do so.

Atty. Estelito Mendoza, Tan's counsel, pointed out that Tanenglian too was named accused in Civil Case 0005 thus making him barred from seeking to reopen the case, which was ordered terminated by the Sandiganbayan last April 23.

He also warned Tanenglian's counsel, Emilio Quiros, that his client may be charged with perjury if they continue with their plan. During the investigation in 2005, Tanenglian signed under oath that he denies the authenticity of the evidenced filed by the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG).

Quiroz argued that it was the PCGG and the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) that approached his client and asked to testify for the government. He noted that last July 15, Tanenglian met with PCGG Chair Camilo Sabio and was informed that they are waiting for the feedback of the OSG

Mendoza also pointed out the actions of former PCGG special counsel Catalino Generillo whose actions are incompatible to public interest. Also terminated, Generillo wants to present Tanenglian in the case. Earlier on, he presented Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr., and Joselito Yujuico whose testimonies where favorable to their interest to the detriment of the government case.

Tan brother faces another abuse charge (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

Another housemaid of Mariano Tanenglian, 19-year-old Aljane Bacanto filed criminal complaints against him, his wife Aleta, and children Marvin and Fayette for alleged maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery, and frustrated homicide.

Bacanto stated how she and other maids were not allowed to leave the house, call anyone, and given any salary, even food. She recounts that because of extreme hunger, she and a fellow house helper were forced to eat dog food only to be beaten up when caught. According to her, the family would padlock the house whenever they would leave.

Lawyer Raymund Quiros, legal counsel for the Tanenglians, said that his client is a subject of an orchestrated move to put his client in a bad light. Mariano Tanenglian is the brother of tycoon Lucio Tan with whom he has been at odds over personal and business matters.

Atty. Quiros, nonetheless, said that his client is ready to answer all the allegations against them.

Tacloban teener files another complaint against Tanenglian, taipan Lucio Tan's brother (The Manila Times)

Another housemaid of Mariano Tanenglian, 19-year-old Aljane Bacanto of Tacloban City, filed criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Mariano Tanenglian, brother of taipan Lucio Tan, and members of his family for alleged "maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery, and frustrated homicide."

Bacanto's fellow co-helper, Mary Jane Sollano, 18, of Pagadian City, Zamboanga de Sur has earlier filed a complaint against their former employer, his wife Aleta, and children Maximilian and Fayette.

In her affidavit, Bacanto recounted her ordeal with the Tanenglians from May 2006 until the time she was allowed to go back to their province last February 2009.

Like Sollano, she was not allowed to leave the house, call anyone, deprived of food and were not given any salary. She state that the only time she was allowed to write to her family was upon the dictation of Fayette. The latter told the helper never to mention their situation at the Tanenglian residence.

To survive, the two were forced to eat dog food only to be caught and punished even more.

Bacanto was responsible for reporting their ordeal to the family of Sollano who was rescued last August 10 through the combined elements of the Quezon City Police District, Commission on Human Rights and Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Another maid files criminal charges vs Mariano Tan (The Philippine Star)

Another housemaid of Mariano Tanenglian, 19-year-old Aljane Bacanto, filed criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ) yesterday against her former employer.

Accompanied by lawyer Al Parreno, Bacanto sought the indictment of Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximillian and Fayette for supposed “maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide.” Bacanto’s fellow maid, Mary Jane Sollano, has already filed at the DOJ a similar complaint against the family last Aug. 27 alleging exactly the same violations.

In her affidavit, Bacanto recounted her ordeal at the residence of the Tanenglian from May 2006 until she was allowed to go back to their province last February.

Just like Sollano, she was not allowed to call anybody outside the house. She said she was only allowed to write letters to her family in Tacloban, but upon dictation of Fayette who told her never to tell her parents of her situation.

In defense, lawyer Raymund Quiroz, representing the Tanenglians, said that someone is instigating the actions of the former house helpers. The case is also a way to stop his client from testifying at the Sandiganbayan. Mariano Tanenglian is reportedly planning to testify for the prosecution against his brother, business tycoon Lucio Tan.

Another maid sues Tanenglian (Manila Standard Today)

Another maid is suing Mariano Tanenglian and his family for abuse and other forms of maltreatment while working in the household since 2006 until she was allowed to leave last February.

Assisted by her lawyer Al Parreno, Aljane Bacanto, 19 years old, of Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte, charged Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximillian and Fayette also for serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide.

Bacanto was responsible for the rescue from the Tanenglian residence of Mary Jane Sollano, another househelper who has earlier filed a similar criminal complaint against the Tanenglian family before the Department of Justice.

Bacanto recounts that for almost three years, she was never allowed to go out—not even once. While she was allowed to write her family in Tacloban, Bacanto said Fayette warned her against talking about her situation at work. During her service as a house helper, she and Sollano were deprived of food. Bacanto said this deprivation of food made them steal food and when caught were mauled by Aleta, Fayette and Maximillian.

Another housemaid of businessman Mariano Tanenglian, 19-year old Aljane Bacanto, filed charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide against him and his family before the Department of Justice.

The said charges were filed against Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximillian and Fayette, all of Bgy. Siena, Quezon City.

Bacanto recounted her ordeal during her service as a house helper. She said she was detained and was never allowed to go out of the house in her three years of employment.

She confirmed the statement of fellow housemaid Mary Jane Sollano, who earlier filed similar case against the Tanenglians, that the Tanenglians prohibited them from calling anybody.

Bacanto said she was only allowed to write letters to her family but upon dictation of Fayette who warned her not to tell her parents about her situation.

She added the refrigerators were padlocked and sometimes they were not fed for three days prompting them to steal food. However, they were beaten black and blue when caught particularly by Aleta, Fayette and Maximillian. She said there was a time that she was forced to eat dog food just to survive.

After leaving the Tanenglian household in February, Bacato immediately alerted Sollano’s parents which led to the latter’s rescue last month.

Another maid files maltreatment charges vs Tanenglian family (Business Mirror)

19-year-old Aljane Bacanto yesterday filed criminal charges before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Lucio Tan’s brother Mariano Tanenglian, his wife and two children for allegedly maltreating her while working as their house help for at least three years.

The former house helper filed charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide two weeks after Sollano filed her separate complaint against the Tanenglian, his wife Aleta, and children Fayette and Maximilian.

In her complaint-affidavit, Bacanto recounted that she started working as a maid in the Tanenglian household in May 2006 until February this year, when she was allowed to return to her province.

During her three-year stay with the Tanenglians, Bacanto claimed that she and the other housemaids were not allowed to go out, use the telephone and other facilities of the house.

She added that her employers would lock the doors and that there were guards outside to prevent them from escaping. Although she was allowed to write letters to her family, the Tanenglians would dictate what to tell her family.

The complainant added that she was only given food whenever her employers were satisfied with her job and that even the refrigerators were padlocked.

Bacanto said she was allowed to return to Tacloban in February 2009 by her employers, who gave her P8,000 for her mother.

Sampulan nag mga abusadong bigtime na bossing! (Bulgar Editorial)

Mariano Tan's ex-maid details alleged abuse (The Philippine Star)

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, former house helper of Mariano Tanenglian, talked about her former employer and stated that for five years, she experienced various forms of abuse.

Sollano, had just finished her first year in high school, started work for the Tanenglian household in 2004. She said during those years, her ordeal included not having anything to eat for days, being forbidden to go near the faucet because she was not allowed to drink water, getting chained for the slightest mistake she made, and working for long hours even if she was sick. Add to these numerous occasions of slapping, kicking, and hitting.

She said that during her five years with the Tanenglians, she had to make do with only three sets of shorts and shirts given to her. On August 10, 2009, she was surprised that she was given what seemed a new blouse and a pair of jeans. She was asked to take a bath and instructed to say only good things about her employer when asked. Afterwhich, she was shown a picture of her father, and soon found out that Sollano’s father, Rolando, was already outside, along with representatives from the Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and local police.

Tanenglian’s lawyer, Raymundo Quiroz, denied the allegations against his client and stated that the charges are “part of a bigger issue.” Recently, Mariano Tanenglian has volunteered to testify against his estranged brother, businessman Lucio Tan, in a government case.

However, Sollano’s lawyer, Al Parreño, said that his client and her family are determined to push through with the case.

CHR to probe maid’s complaint vs Lucio Tan’s brod (People’s Tonight)

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will conduct a thorough investigation on the alleged mental and physical abused committed by businessman Mariano Tanenglian to his house helper of five years, Mary Jane Sollano.

CHR Protection and Monitoring Division head Atty. Carmelita Rosete said that the commission will also look upon the possibility of requesting the Bureau of Immigration to issue a hold departure order against the Chinese businessman. Atty. Rosete revealed that the said case may be a violation of the child abuse law and child trafficking since Sollano was still a minor when she was employed by the Tanenglians.

During the joint rescue operation of CHR, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and local police, the group saw the maid’s hands badly scalded due to the hot water allegedly poured on her as a punishment for not doing her job well.

Recently, Sollano filed charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery, and frustrated homicide before the Department of Justice against Mariano, his wife Aleta, and their children Maximilian and Fayette.
Her three-page affidavit detailed the forms of abuse she experienced in the hands of her employers from July 2009 to August 9, 2009.

Maid sues former master for abuse (Malaya)

A series of criminal charges were filed at the Department of Justice yesterday by 18-year-old housemaid Mary Jane Sollano who was rescued by authorities Aug. 10.

Sollano filed against Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximilian and Fayette charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide.

Sollano said she suffered five years of physical, mental, and sexual abuse from her employers that only ended when another housemaid managed to call her father and alert the authorities about her predicament.

Sollano said she worked for Tanenglians from July 2004 to Aug. 10, 2009. She said she and the other house helpers were not allowed to use the telephone or cell phone, talk to fellow househelpers, laugh, sit in (family’s) chairs, look outside the window, watch TV, eat at any time, sleep or rest before their tasks were completed, and read any material or write.

She said she was punished for every small mistake, including whipping by a piece of steel or a thick slipper. She said Fayette once poured boiling water on her hand for a mistake and Maximilian kicked her, chained her, and did not feed her for three days when he caught her taking food from the refrigerator. Sollano said mother and daughter also took nude photos of her and threatened to show them around to other people, or to turn her over to a friend who owned a night club.

Maid files more raps vs billionaire (People's Journal)

Battered maid Mary Jane Sollano, represented by her lawyer Al Parreno, yesterday filed additional criminal charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide before the Department of Justice against Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Aleta, as well as children Maximilian and Fayette.

In a three-page affidavit, Sollano detailed how she was allegedly “physically and mentally abused” by the Tanenglian family inside their residence at Bgy. Siena in Quezon City from July 2004 up to Aug. 10. The maid claimed she and her fellow helpers were “not allowed to use the telephone or cellphone, laugh, sit in their (family’s) chairs, look outside the window, watch TV, eat at any time, sleep or rest before our tasks were completed, and read any reading material or even write.”

During her first month at the Tanenglian household, Sollano alleged she was already maltreated and abused by the Tanenglian household. “I was not yet familiar with my job so Ate Aleta got mad and slapped me. Since then, they would instantly hurt me for every small mistake I make,” she said. “In my five-year stay in their house, I was not allowed to go out. They even threatened me that they would do something bad if I ask for help from outside.”

Sollano said she tried to escape by asking permission to go home to her province in Zamboanga del Sur but her employers would not allow her. She was told that she had to finish her two-year contract.

When her contract ended in 2006, Aleta supposedly called a lawyer and told the housemaid to sign a new contract without reading its contents. She only learned later on that she signed another contract for another two years of service in the house.

Sollano added that she pleaded to her employer to let her go, but Aleta said she still had debts to pay.

She even recalled an instance where she was brought by Aleta and Fayette to a room where they took nude photos of her.

Sollano said Fayette once poured hot water on her hands after she was caught eating their food. In another incident, her hands and neck were supposedly chained.

Attached with the complaint were affidavits from police, Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development as well as other persons present during the rescue of the housemaid.

Lucio Tan’s brother cites harassment (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

According to lawyer Raymundo Quiroz, the maltreatment case filed by Mary Jane Sollano against the brother of tycoon Lucio Tan, Mariano Tanenglian, is meant to discredit him.

Atty. Quiroz further explained that the said case is a form of harassment to Tanenglian for volunteering to testify against his brother Lucio, over his ill-gotten wealth case. The complaint came out after his client communicated with the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) and the Office of the Solicitor General and offered to testify against Lucio Tan on July 18, 2009.

Quiroz claimed that they sent out press releases to the media offices, including the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, but it never came out. The lawyer claims that the reason for such is that Lucio Tan has the power to pull out advertisements from these media companies if they go against the business tycoon.

In addition, Atty. Quiroz clarified that Sollano was not rescued but was turned over by her former employer to her father and uncle in the presence of the barangay Sto. Domingo leaders.

He said that he has yet to see the complaint filed by the former house helper at the Department of Justice.

Charges filed vs Lucio Tan brod, other kin (Business Mirror)

Charges of maltreatment and abuse were filed before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Lucio Tan’s brother Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and their two children based on the complaint of their 18-year-old housemaid, Mary Jane Sollano.

The complainant was accompanied by her lawyer Al Parreno to the DOJ in filing the case before the office of State Prosecutor Edna Valenzuela.

In her affidavit given to the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Women’s and Children’s Complaint Desk, Sollano stated what she underwent during her five-year stay with the Tanenglians.

The former house help recounted that she was prevented from using the telephone, her cellular phone, sit on the sofas, eat at any time, laugh, and even read and write. She also claimed that her former employer would physically hurt her if she made a mistake. Also, she said that at one point, Tanenglian's wife, Aleta, and her daughter Fayette brought her to a room and took nude photos of her.

The said affidavit was accompanied by the sworn statements of members of the PNP, Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development, relatives of Sollano, and other individuals present during the rescue operation at the Tanenglian’s residence last August 10, 2009.

Attached to the complaint were affidavits of representatives of the police, Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development, relatives of the victim and other individuals present when she was rescued from the Tanenglian’s residence on August 10, 2009.

Sollano's parents thought that their daughter was already dead since they have lost contact with her for the last five years. They only knew her whereabouts through Aljane Bacanto, another house helper of the Tanenglians, who was able to escape for their employer's residence.

2 maids file complaint vs Tan brother (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

Two former housemaids of the brother of Lucio Tan, Mariano Tanenglian, filed a complaint yesterday against their former employer and his family claiming that they were maltreated and detained against their will.

According to Atty, Al Parreno, the lawyer of maids Mary Jane Sollano and Aljance Bacanto, the two pressed charges against Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Alete, and two children, Marvin and Fayette.

Parreno clarified that the police report stating that Sollano’s father accepted P150, 000.00 from Tanenglian and signed a waiver stating that they will not pursue and participate in a case against Tanenglian have no bearing to the complaint filed by the two maids.

The complaint stated that Sollano, who was working for the family for five years, and Bacanto, working for three years, were maltreated by the Tanenglian family. Furthermore, the two did not receive any payment for their work and were barred from leaving the house and communicating with their relatives.

The two are now under the custody of Kaisa Foundation which helps women that are victims of violence.

Despite the signed ‘settlement’ with their former employer, the two maids of Mariano Tanenglian filed a formal complaint against their former employer.

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, and Aljane Bacanto, 16, went to the Quezon City Police District Station 1 to give their sworn statements against Tanenglian’s family. About the settlement, Parreno clarified that the agreement is not a basis to evade the criminal charges. The amount was only for the unpaid salaries of Sollano for the past five years. The lawyer of the two housemaids said that the two took time to file the complaint because they were undergoing counseling, and medical and psychological treatment.

Teresita Ang See’s Kaisa Foundation is also helping the two battered house helpers.

In their complaint, the house helpers claimed that they suffered physical, psychological, and emotional abuse from Tanenglian’s wife and two children. Sollano said that she was imprisoned in the Tanenglian’s residence for five years while Bacanto was detained for three years.

Maid cries abuse in household of Lucio Tan’s brother (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

A maid in the household of business tycoon Lucio Tan’s brother, Mariano Tanenglian will file serious illegal detention and other cases to the Department of Justice.

According to the victim’s lawyer, Atty. Anna Marie Trinidad, they will file the complaint as soon as her client, 18-year old Mary Jane Sollano recovers from the trauma she suffered due to the ordeal. Trinidad stated that Sollano suffered physical, emotional, and psychological abuse from Tangenglian’s wife and two children.

The victim’s parents only knew about her condition through Aljane Bacanto, another helper of the Tanenglians who managed to escape from the residence. Sollano’s family then asked for the help of various government agencies to free their daughter from her employers.

Tycoon’s brother faces maltreatment raps (INQUIRER.net)

A criminal complaint will be filed against the brother of Lucio Tan, Mariano Tanenglian, for alleged maltreatment of his maid, 18-year old Mary Jane Sollano.
Authorities composed of Commission on Human Rights (CHR), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Quezon City police went in Tan’s residence in Quezon City, Monday.

Sollano, through lawyer Melanie Trinidad, said she would file a case for illegal detention and abuses she suffered from Mariano Taneglian’s wife, Aleta, and their two children in the last five years. The victim, who has hired during her early teens, claims she was not fed properly, was not allowed to communicate with anyone outside the house, and didn’t even know what date is was.

The parents of the house helper knew of her whereabouts through a co-helper, identified as Aljane Bacanto, who escaped the Tanenglian’s residence recently. They sought help from provincemates in Zamboanga del Sur and private lawyers to coordinate with CHR, which paved the way to the rescue of the victim.
