Taipan questions validity of brod's offer to testify for gov't (Malaya)

Lawyers of taipan Lucio Tan questioned the validity of allowing estranged brother Mariano Tanenglian to become a witness for the government, saying that Mariano has no legal standing to do so.

Atty. Estelito Mendoza, Tan's counsel, pointed out that Tanenglian too was named accused in Civil Case 0005 thus making him barred from seeking to reopen the case, which was ordered terminated by the Sandiganbayan last April 23.

He also warned Tanenglian's counsel, Emilio Quiros, that his client may be charged with perjury if they continue with their plan. During the investigation in 2005, Tanenglian signed under oath that he denies the authenticity of the evidenced filed by the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG).

Quiroz argued that it was the PCGG and the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) that approached his client and asked to testify for the government. He noted that last July 15, Tanenglian met with PCGG Chair Camilo Sabio and was informed that they are waiting for the feedback of the OSG

Mendoza also pointed out the actions of former PCGG special counsel Catalino Generillo whose actions are incompatible to public interest. Also terminated, Generillo wants to present Tanenglian in the case. Earlier on, he presented Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr., and Joselito Yujuico whose testimonies where favorable to their interest to the detriment of the government case.

Tan brother faces another abuse charge (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

Another housemaid of Mariano Tanenglian, 19-year-old Aljane Bacanto filed criminal complaints against him, his wife Aleta, and children Marvin and Fayette for alleged maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery, and frustrated homicide.

Bacanto stated how she and other maids were not allowed to leave the house, call anyone, and given any salary, even food. She recounts that because of extreme hunger, she and a fellow house helper were forced to eat dog food only to be beaten up when caught. According to her, the family would padlock the house whenever they would leave.

Lawyer Raymund Quiros, legal counsel for the Tanenglians, said that his client is a subject of an orchestrated move to put his client in a bad light. Mariano Tanenglian is the brother of tycoon Lucio Tan with whom he has been at odds over personal and business matters.

Atty. Quiros, nonetheless, said that his client is ready to answer all the allegations against them.

Tacloban teener files another complaint against Tanenglian, taipan Lucio Tan's brother (The Manila Times)

Another housemaid of Mariano Tanenglian, 19-year-old Aljane Bacanto of Tacloban City, filed criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Mariano Tanenglian, brother of taipan Lucio Tan, and members of his family for alleged "maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery, and frustrated homicide."

Bacanto's fellow co-helper, Mary Jane Sollano, 18, of Pagadian City, Zamboanga de Sur has earlier filed a complaint against their former employer, his wife Aleta, and children Maximilian and Fayette.

In her affidavit, Bacanto recounted her ordeal with the Tanenglians from May 2006 until the time she was allowed to go back to their province last February 2009.

Like Sollano, she was not allowed to leave the house, call anyone, deprived of food and were not given any salary. She state that the only time she was allowed to write to her family was upon the dictation of Fayette. The latter told the helper never to mention their situation at the Tanenglian residence.

To survive, the two were forced to eat dog food only to be caught and punished even more.

Bacanto was responsible for reporting their ordeal to the family of Sollano who was rescued last August 10 through the combined elements of the Quezon City Police District, Commission on Human Rights and Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Another maid files criminal charges vs Mariano Tan (The Philippine Star)

Another housemaid of Mariano Tanenglian, 19-year-old Aljane Bacanto, filed criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ) yesterday against her former employer.

Accompanied by lawyer Al Parreno, Bacanto sought the indictment of Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximillian and Fayette for supposed “maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide.” Bacanto’s fellow maid, Mary Jane Sollano, has already filed at the DOJ a similar complaint against the family last Aug. 27 alleging exactly the same violations.

In her affidavit, Bacanto recounted her ordeal at the residence of the Tanenglian from May 2006 until she was allowed to go back to their province last February.

Just like Sollano, she was not allowed to call anybody outside the house. She said she was only allowed to write letters to her family in Tacloban, but upon dictation of Fayette who told her never to tell her parents of her situation.

In defense, lawyer Raymund Quiroz, representing the Tanenglians, said that someone is instigating the actions of the former house helpers. The case is also a way to stop his client from testifying at the Sandiganbayan. Mariano Tanenglian is reportedly planning to testify for the prosecution against his brother, business tycoon Lucio Tan.

Another maid sues Tanenglian (Manila Standard Today)

Another maid is suing Mariano Tanenglian and his family for abuse and other forms of maltreatment while working in the household since 2006 until she was allowed to leave last February.

Assisted by her lawyer Al Parreno, Aljane Bacanto, 19 years old, of Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte, charged Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximillian and Fayette also for serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide.

Bacanto was responsible for the rescue from the Tanenglian residence of Mary Jane Sollano, another househelper who has earlier filed a similar criminal complaint against the Tanenglian family before the Department of Justice.

Bacanto recounts that for almost three years, she was never allowed to go out—not even once. While she was allowed to write her family in Tacloban, Bacanto said Fayette warned her against talking about her situation at work. During her service as a house helper, she and Sollano were deprived of food. Bacanto said this deprivation of food made them steal food and when caught were mauled by Aleta, Fayette and Maximillian.

Another housemaid sues billionaire employer (People's Journal and People's Tonight)

Another housemaid of businessman Mariano Tanenglian, 19-year old Aljane Bacanto, filed charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide against him and his family before the Department of Justice.

The said charges were filed against Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximillian and Fayette, all of Bgy. Siena, Quezon City.

Bacanto recounted her ordeal during her service as a house helper. She said she was detained and was never allowed to go out of the house in her three years of employment.

She confirmed the statement of fellow housemaid Mary Jane Sollano, who earlier filed similar case against the Tanenglians, that the Tanenglians prohibited them from calling anybody.

Bacanto said she was only allowed to write letters to her family but upon dictation of Fayette who warned her not to tell her parents about her situation.

She added the refrigerators were padlocked and sometimes they were not fed for three days prompting them to steal food. However, they were beaten black and blue when caught particularly by Aleta, Fayette and Maximillian. She said there was a time that she was forced to eat dog food just to survive.

After leaving the Tanenglian household in February, Bacato immediately alerted Sollano’s parents which led to the latter’s rescue last month.

Another maid files maltreatment charges vs Tanenglian family (Business Mirror)

19-year-old Aljane Bacanto yesterday filed criminal charges before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Lucio Tan’s brother Mariano Tanenglian, his wife and two children for allegedly maltreating her while working as their house help for at least three years.

The former house helper filed charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide two weeks after Sollano filed her separate complaint against the Tanenglian, his wife Aleta, and children Fayette and Maximilian.

In her complaint-affidavit, Bacanto recounted that she started working as a maid in the Tanenglian household in May 2006 until February this year, when she was allowed to return to her province.

During her three-year stay with the Tanenglians, Bacanto claimed that she and the other housemaids were not allowed to go out, use the telephone and other facilities of the house.

She added that her employers would lock the doors and that there were guards outside to prevent them from escaping. Although she was allowed to write letters to her family, the Tanenglians would dictate what to tell her family.

The complainant added that she was only given food whenever her employers were satisfied with her job and that even the refrigerators were padlocked.

Bacanto said she was allowed to return to Tacloban in February 2009 by her employers, who gave her P8,000 for her mother.

Sampulan nag mga abusadong bigtime na bossing! (Bulgar Editorial)

Mariano Tan's ex-maid details alleged abuse (The Philippine Star)

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, former house helper of Mariano Tanenglian, talked about her former employer and stated that for five years, she experienced various forms of abuse.

Sollano, had just finished her first year in high school, started work for the Tanenglian household in 2004. She said during those years, her ordeal included not having anything to eat for days, being forbidden to go near the faucet because she was not allowed to drink water, getting chained for the slightest mistake she made, and working for long hours even if she was sick. Add to these numerous occasions of slapping, kicking, and hitting.

She said that during her five years with the Tanenglians, she had to make do with only three sets of shorts and shirts given to her. On August 10, 2009, she was surprised that she was given what seemed a new blouse and a pair of jeans. She was asked to take a bath and instructed to say only good things about her employer when asked. Afterwhich, she was shown a picture of her father, and soon found out that Sollano’s father, Rolando, was already outside, along with representatives from the Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and local police.

Tanenglian’s lawyer, Raymundo Quiroz, denied the allegations against his client and stated that the charges are “part of a bigger issue.” Recently, Mariano Tanenglian has volunteered to testify against his estranged brother, businessman Lucio Tan, in a government case.

However, Sollano’s lawyer, Al ParreƱo, said that his client and her family are determined to push through with the case.

CHR to probe maid’s complaint vs Lucio Tan’s brod (People’s Tonight)

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will conduct a thorough investigation on the alleged mental and physical abused committed by businessman Mariano Tanenglian to his house helper of five years, Mary Jane Sollano.

CHR Protection and Monitoring Division head Atty. Carmelita Rosete said that the commission will also look upon the possibility of requesting the Bureau of Immigration to issue a hold departure order against the Chinese businessman. Atty. Rosete revealed that the said case may be a violation of the child abuse law and child trafficking since Sollano was still a minor when she was employed by the Tanenglians.

During the joint rescue operation of CHR, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and local police, the group saw the maid’s hands badly scalded due to the hot water allegedly poured on her as a punishment for not doing her job well.

Recently, Sollano filed charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery, and frustrated homicide before the Department of Justice against Mariano, his wife Aleta, and their children Maximilian and Fayette.
Her three-page affidavit detailed the forms of abuse she experienced in the hands of her employers from July 2009 to August 9, 2009.
