Charges of maltreatment and abuse were filed before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Lucio Tan’s brother Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and their two children based on the complaint of their 18-year-old housemaid, Mary Jane Sollano.
The complainant was accompanied by her lawyer Al Parreno to the DOJ in filing the case before the office of State Prosecutor Edna Valenzuela.
In her affidavit given to the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Women’s and Children’s Complaint Desk, Sollano stated what she underwent during her five-year stay with the Tanenglians.
The former house help recounted that she was prevented from using the telephone, her cellular phone, sit on the sofas, eat at any time, laugh, and even read and write. She also claimed that her former employer would physically hurt her if she made a mistake. Also, she said that at one point, Tanenglian's wife, Aleta, and her daughter Fayette brought her to a room and took nude photos of her.
The said affidavit was accompanied by the sworn statements of members of the PNP, Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development, relatives of Sollano, and other individuals present during the rescue operation at the Tanenglian’s residence last August 10, 2009.
Attached to the complaint were affidavits of representatives of the police, Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development, relatives of the victim and other individuals present when she was rescued from the Tanenglian’s residence on August 10, 2009.
Sollano's parents thought that their daughter was already dead since they have lost contact with her for the last five years. They only knew her whereabouts through Aljane Bacanto, another house helper of the Tanenglians, who was able to escape for their employer's residence.
